About
Green Chorlton is a not-for-profit community group that aims to promote environmental issues and sustainable living in a fun and friendly way.
Our main activity is staging Chorlton's Big Green Festival every year, but we also do other things such as overseeing the eco-refurbishment of the youth centre at St Clement's Church, Chorlton.
We are run by volunteers and have no affiliation to any political or religious group, which gives us a unique platform to speak to the local community. Indeed, we don't just want to provide facts about climate change, we want to show people how they can dramatically improve their quality of life by choosing to make a few simple lifestyle changes.
Of course, it's important that we practise what we preach. With Chorlton's Big Green Festival, for example, we make a point of recycling or composting our waste and using eco-friendly products such as plant-derived plastic pint pots and biodegradable paper plates. What's more, we aim to ensure that our food and drink suppliers offer locally produced, responsibly sourced and/or Fairtrade products. And most of our energy comes from renewable sources such as wind, solar and even pedal power!
We're not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination. But by staging events like Chorlton's Big Green Festival without damaging the environment, the Green Chorlton team wants to prove that living sustainably isn't all that difficult. And hopefully that it can be lots of fun too!
